Renewable Natural Gas for Transportation (Paper)

On August 1, 2012, The National Petroleum Council (NPC) in approving its report, Advancing Technology for America’s Transportation Future, also approved the making available of certain materials used in the study process, including detailed, specific subject matter papers prepared or used by the study’s Task Groups and/or Subgroups. NPC has kindly agreed that one of those reports: Topic Paper #22 — Renewable Natural Gas for Transportation: An Overview of the Feedstock Capacity, Economics, and GHG Emission Reduction Benefits of RNG as a Low-Carbon Fuel — also be made available from the IANGV Knowledgebase website.

The Topic Paper represent the views and conclusions of the authors. The National Petroleum Council (www.npc.org) has not endorsed or approved the statements and conclusions contained in it but has approved publication of the paper in the interest of transparency.

Published March 2012, the study explores the renewable natural gas (RNG) supply chain as it existed at that time, the economics of RNG, GHG life-cycle analysis, its application to the transportation sector, and concludes with 21 key findings, including:

  • Key Finding 18. RNG can achieve an estimated 90% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions when used in transport applications.
  • Key Finding 20. The case studies profiled in this white paper demonstrate the suitability of RNG for transportation.
